Drywall Repair and Small Repairs in Waterloo

A drywall patch is easy to do and hard to do invisibly. The difference is three thin coats, a wide feather and a primer, not one thick coat and hope.

Most drywall calls in Waterloo are one of a handful of things. A doorknob hole behind a bedroom door in a student rental. Nail pops and corner cracks in a Vista Hills or Clair Hills house that has finished settling. A towel bar, TV mount or closet rod that pulled out of the wall and took a chunk with it. A brown ring on the ceiling under a bathroom, now dry, that needs the damage cut out and closed. And the older homes around uptown and Mary-Allen, where the walls are plaster and a crack has opened along the lath.

What we ask before quoting

  • A photo with something for scale. A hand or a tape measure in the frame tells us whether it is a mesh-patch job or a cut-and-replace job.
  • Whether the cause is fixed. A water stain from a leak that is still leaking gets patched and stained again. The plumber or roofer goes first.
  • Drywall or plaster. Plaster in the older homes needs a setting compound and a different approach to a loose section.
  • Paint. Whether you want the patch primed and left for your painter, or painted to blend. Blending into an old colour is rarely invisible; painting the wall corner to corner is.
  • How many. Ten small patches in one house is a half-day; one is an hour plus the drying time between coats, which is why small patches get grouped with other jobs.

Holes and pulled-out anchors

A doorknob hole or a fist-sized hole gets either a self-adhesive mesh patch for the small ones or a cut-out square with a backing strip and a new piece of drywall for anything bigger. Three coats of compound, each feathered wider than the last, sanded between, then a primer so the patch does not flash through the paint. A door stop goes on at the same time so it does not happen again. Where a towel bar or shelf came out, the fix is a patch plus the right anchor for the load — a toggle for hollow drywall, or a screw into a stud found with a detector rather than by guessing.

Nail pops and settlement cracks

New houses in Vista Hills, Clair Hills and the newer parts of Laurelwood go through two or three winters of framing shrinkage, and the drywall shows it: small round bumps where nails or screws have pushed out, and cracks at the corners of doors and windows and along the ceiling line. If the house is still inside its Tarion warranty period, report them there first; the builder is responsible. After that, each pop gets a new screw driven beside it, the old fastener set below the surface, and both filled. Corner cracks get taped rather than just filled, or they come back. Whole rooms of pops are common and are priced as a room, not per pop.

Water-stain patches

Once the leak is confirmed fixed and the drywall is dry, stained and sagging board is cut back to sound material, a new piece is fitted, taped and coated, and a stain-blocking primer goes over it. If the board is still soft or the stain is still spreading, the job waits. A patch over a live leak is money spent twice.

Plaster in older Waterloo homes

The pre-war houses around uptown, Mary-Allen and the streets off Erb and Bridgeport have plaster on lath. Hairline cracks get opened slightly, filled with a setting compound and sanded. A section that sounds hollow when tapped has separated from the lath and can sometimes be re-secured with plaster washers or adhesive. A large failed area is a plastering job, which is a different trade, and you will be told rather than have it skimmed over.

The small repairs that come with it

While the compound dries there is usually other work on the list: re-hanging a closet door, replacing a cracked switch plate or outlet cover, tightening a loose towel bar, adjusting a cabinet door, re-caulking a tub surround, replacing a broken blind bracket, swapping a smoke alarm battery and testing the alarm. That is how a two-hour drywall visit becomes a useful half day.

Where the line is

If the hole in the wall is where an electrician needs to run cable, the electrician goes first and the handyman closes the wall afterward. If the ceiling stain is from a pipe, the plumber fixes the pipe and the handyman fixes the ceiling. Drywall installation for a whole room, a new ceiling, or taping a basement is a drywall contractor, not a patch job.

Frequently asked questions

Can you match the paint on the patch?

A patch can be primed and painted with paint you have left over, and on a flat wall in a light colour it often blends well. On an older colour, a sheen finish or a wall that gets side light, a touch-up shows. The honest answer is that painting the wall corner to corner is the way to make a patch disappear, and you will be told which you have.

How long does a drywall patch take?

The work is an hour or two. The drying between coats is the rest of the day, sometimes into the next. That is why patches are grouped with other jobs on the list or done as a two-visit job, and why a whole room of nail pops is a half-day rather than a hundred separate patches.

My new house has nail pops everywhere. Is that normal?

Yes, for the first two or three winters as the framing dries and shrinks. If you are still inside the Tarion warranty, report them to the builder through the proper process first. After that, each one gets re-fastened and filled, and corner cracks get taped, priced by the room.
